Others would say that it has exactly the same natural and nutritional components just like our table sugar and consist the same amount of calories. Others would call high fructose corn syrup health hazard, dangerous and natural evil. It is so confusing on what to believe because it has been tagged as Enemy number 1 for dieters.
This sweetener that is made from corn is a common element of the processed food that we consume everyday in our life such as soft drinks, pasta sauce, commercial cakes and cookies, salad dressing and breakfast cereals. This common additive is said to be the main reason why there are many people who are obese and diabetic. High intake of high fructose corn syrup increases the risk of atherosclerosis and hypertension. However, supporters of HFCS and table sugar say that they contain the same number of calories. Both are sweet and have the same calories per gram. This means that the calories are not the problem with HFCS but the metabolism of excess in fructose is the reason. Another reason, the Director of Center for Science in the Public Interest said that they did not find any evidence that fructose corn syrup is worse than our table sugar. Additionally, there were no reported long term effects of high fructose sugar syrup in our body.
Studies showed that large consumption of high fructose corn syrup increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Obesity and the resistance to insulin are also associated to high consumption of HFCS. Furthermore, it also contributes to the formation of kidney stone, gout, and non-alcoholic non-fatty liver disease and is being linked to the diabetes complications and the aging process of an individual.
The Corn Refiners Association contradicted the statement made by Environmental Health the HFCS contains small amounts of the mercury which is known to be harmful to our health. However, another study made by Institute of Agriculture and Trade Policy confirmed the report and found out that 1/3 of the tested food containing high fiber corn syrup were tested positive with mercury. In line with this, the production of soda in US applies mercury free technology but what about the other manufacturers in another part of the world? Are they adapting the same technology?
The good news, FDA stated twice already that high fructose corn syrup is “SAFE TO USE”. By making a limit on all the sweeteners and HFCS will help you lose weight and prevent the onset of certain diseases. The only way to remain healthy is to use less sugar in all its forms. Avoid sweetened sodas and read the product labels and avoid buying products with high content of HFCS. Look for various ways on cutting your intake of table sugar and as much as possible include in your diet and make it a habit to use natural non-caloric sweetener in your tea, coffee and desserts. In other words, to avoid any dangers brought by high fructose corn syrup, use less sugar in your diet.
